In the winter of 1917-1918, subchaser crews stationed on the north Atlantic coast of the U.S. were training for duty overseas. The winter was one of the coldest on record, the harbors dangerous with ice floes.

This is a set of photos submitted by Jim Gunther, whose father, Charles Gaffney, served on SC 79. The photos of the chaser in the ice were taken in New York.
